      Swaziland Visa Policy

Swaziland has a visa policy that governs the entry requirements for all visitors. Currently, all visitors must have a visa unless they are nationals of countries on the visa waiver list. There are over 90 countries and territories whose nationals can visit Swaziland without a visa and stay for up to 30 days.

All visitors must have passports with a minimum validity of 3 months. Tourists from Commonwealth countries, including EU nations, Japan, and the USA, do not need visas to visit Eswatini. The same visa-free regime applies to business visitors from these countries, who can stay in the country for up to 30 days. However, they are allowed to apply for a 30-day extension from the Home Affairs Ministry. Those wishing to stay for longer than 60 days must apply for a Temporary Resident Permit (TRP).

The TRP allows them to stay in Swaziland (Eswatini) for up to one year or more. To apply for this permit or any other visa, you must visit the nearest diplomatic mission to submit your application. If there is no foreign mission office near you, consider applying through a licensed visa partner of the Swaziland government.

Note: Travelers coming through South Africa should apply for their visas through the High Commission in the country.

      Key Information About Swaziland

Swaziland is a landlocked country bordered by South Africa and Mozambique, with a unique culture that many may find unfamiliar. Read our dos and don'ts for visitors to ensure you have an enjoyable visit to this absolute monarchy.

Medical Insurance: All visitors to Eswatini must have active health insurance that is accepted in the country or neighboring South Africa, which also covers the Kingdom of Eswatini. Learn more about insurance companies with local coverage.

Registration: Eswatini is generally a peaceful country, but like any nation, there may be occasional disruptions. During such periods, visitors are advised against traveling, and this information can be obtained from foreign missions abroad. It is in your best interest to register with embassies and consulates.

Public/Private Facilities: There are guidelines and protocols to follow at public and private buildings and facilities in the Kingdom of Eswatini. If you have any doubts, ask for clarification.

Night Adventures: It is advisable to avoid walking in central Manzini and Mbabane at night or traveling to remote areas. If you must venture out at night, do so in groups for your own safety.

Securing Your Belongings: It is unsafe to publicly display valuable possessions such as jewelry or large amounts of money. Before leaving your hotel room, secure your belongings in a safe place.

Approved Routes: The routes in and out of Swaziland can be porous, making them unsafe for night travel. Avoid traveling in or out of the country by land at night.

Photography: It is not advisable to take pictures of military zones and police headquarters. Additionally, taking pictures in places where traditional activities are taking place without permission may lead to trouble with the authorities. Please exercise caution.

Smoking: Smoking in public places such as restaurants and bus parks is prohibited. Smoking is also not allowed inside taxis, hospitals, etc. If you need to smoke, do so in designated areas where smoking is permitted.

Application Fee: The embassy will charge a significant fee for visa applications, which must be paid before the application is accepted. The fees range from over $100 to $200 or more, depending on various factors. If you plan to visit frequently, it is advisable to apply for a multiple-entry visa and pay the fee once, rather than paying a new fee for single-entry applications each time.

Extension: Visitors wishing to extend their stay in Eswatini by 30 days must apply for an extension before their visa expires. Applying for an extension on an expired visa is a violation and may result in fines. Furthermore, the extension request may not be granted, and you may be deported immediately. Plan your itinerary carefully and apply for extensions at least one week before your visa expires.

Dress Code: There is no strict dress code in Eswatini, but visitors are advised to dress modestly in public. It is a conservative society, and there are national dress codes that expose some skin. Unless you are wearing such attire, it is best to stick to Western clothing that covers your body to avoid offending the locals.

Vaccination: Eswatini does not have strict vaccination requirements, but it is recommended to consider getting vaccines such as Yellow fever, typhoid, and Covid to protect your health. Consult your doctor for professional advice.

ID Card: Always carry a valid ID card with you when in public, in case you encounter law enforcement officers. It is also advisable to carry a photocopy of your visa when visiting government buildings or restricted areas in the country. These documents will save you time and effort when identifying yourself and explaining your purpose of visit.

Overstaying: All visitors must leave the Kingdom before their visa expires or, at most, on the day it expires. Failure to do so may result in significant fines, which must be paid before you are allowed to leave the country. Each day spent on an expired visa will incur additional fees.

Respect the Customs: Always show respect for the customs and traditions of the people, even if you may not agree with them. It is considered taboo to disrespect traditional authorities or speak ill of the King. Eswatini is one of the three remaining absolute monarchies in Africa, and the people hold their monarch in high regard.
